When handling bulk material, controlling what passes into a hopper and what stays out is often a critical part of the process. A hydraulic grizzly is designed to do exactly that. Built as a heavy-duty grid over the hopper opening, it allows smaller material to drop through while stopping oversized pieces. In this project, Ward designed and built a large hydraulic grizzly for a demanding bulk material handling application.

What makes this hydraulic grizzly especially useful is its ability to lift and dump retained material. Rather than acting as a fixed screen only, the grizzly table is hydraulically actuated so it can raise at an angle and discharge material caught on top into the lump chute. This improves cleanout, helps manage oversized material, and adds flexibility to the overall system.

Because this hopper and grizzly assembly is installed at a significant height, the system also includes lump chutes to safely guide rejected material down into bins below. Internal baffles help absorb impact and slow the material as it travels downward, reducing wear and minimizing the force delivered to the receiving bins.

As with many of our projects, this work began in the engineering department. Ward is a design-build shop, so the hydraulic grizzly, hopper, supporting structure, and related equipment were developed in-house to meet the customer’s requirements. Once drawings were approved, fabrication moved to the shop floor, where the structural frames, grid sections, and other components were built, assembled, and tested.

The finished scope of work for this project included the design-build of the hydraulic grizzlies, hoppers, support structure, conveyor, feeders, and lump chutes. It is a good example of how Ward takes a bulk material handling requirement from concept through engineering, fabrication, assembly, and final installation.
